Today's presentation we're 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:03.000 going to talk about what is healthy community 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:05.000 living. What's included in healthy community living and the 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:08.000 license which includes actually four programs now. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 So we've come a long way since last year when you may have 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:15.000 seen me present at the conference in Michigan. We now have community 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.000 living skills which also includes a facilitator training for 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:22.000 facilitating community living skills, living well in the 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:27.000 community, facilitating group training, and then also working with 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:30.000 disability will be coming soon. I'll 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:33.000 be talking about each of these. Then we will hear from our healthy community 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:36.000 living expert facilitators, Dori and Edgar, who will 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:44.000 share their experiences about the program with all of you 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:47.000 . Healthy community living is a 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:51.000 health promotion and self-management program for people with disabilities. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:54.000 It includes two peer-led independent living skills 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.000 workshops. One, community 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:00.000 living skills, and the other; living well in the 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:03.000 community. It also includes facilitator 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:06.000 trainings you can do at your own pace for learn 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:09.000 ing how to facilitate each of these programs and 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:12.000 workshops as well as a separate online facilitating 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:16.000 groups training intended to help independent living 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:19.000 staff bolster their facilitation skills and learn more about how 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:23.000 to facilitate groups effectively 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:29.000 . Next slide. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:33.000 Healthy community living is -- oh sorry 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:36.000 . I have to make my slides move 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:39.000 . Healthy community living is a series of workshops 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:43.000 that people can take with their peers to have group discussions on 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:46.000 topics relevant to their lives. Facilitators 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:49.000 present slides actually from the healthy community living 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:53.000 website to consumers, and that can be done either 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:56.000 in person or now most 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:00.000 ly that's happening online through an online platform such as 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:03.000 Zoom, just like this. The workshops focus on quality 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:06.000 of life, building self-determination, related 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:10.000 ness, autonomy, and find lg supports 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:13.000 . Finding and building supporting. They foster peer connections and 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:16.000 in an independent living setting 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:20.000 . Healthy community 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:23.000 living is also a fun and challenging 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:26.000 way for people to learn more about themselves and their health 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:30.000 . It supports people to learn about increasing their independence 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:33.000 in the community, it means independent 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:36.000 living core services for your CIL or your 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:39.000 organization. And it's created in 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:43.000 part -- in partnership with people with disabilities 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:47.000 from across the country 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:50.000 . How is healthy community 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.000 living. We wanted to stay true to the nothing about us 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:57.000 without us in independent living so 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:00.000 we brainstormed outlined. Came together with people from 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.000 all 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.000 different from different regions. 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:10.000 To help us create these workshops. And our 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.000 collaborators, provides resources, 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:16.000 ideas, mini focus 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:20.000 groups and feedback from consume sers and gave us 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:23.000 a lot of on the ground feedback and 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:26.000 information included in the workshops. Who is 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:29.000 healthy community living for? Next slide. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:32.000 Healthy community living is for everyone. And it can be 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:35.000 a great way to connect with consumers, help to reduce 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.000 isolation, and help people meet their independent 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:46.000 living goals 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:49.000 . Healthy community living has a series 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:53.000 of workshops and the first is community living skills. Community 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:56.000 living skills is an 11-week workshop within the 00:10:56.000 --> 00:11:05.000 community living program. And community 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:08.000 living skills focuses on facilitators going 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:13.000 through their own pace. For community living skills, 00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:16.000 next slide. Community living skills 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:19.000 participants can build support with support network 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.000 s with their peers. They explore options and possibilities 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:25.000 for setting personal goals. They get information 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:28.000 on skills and resources for living and participating 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:32.000 in the community. And they build confidence and comfort 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:37.000 in decision-making and problem solving. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:40.000 This is the look at the next slide is 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.000 a look at the website for Community 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:46.000 Living Skills, which includes as you'll see, the orientation 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:49.000 and then ten other workshops. And you can do the 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:52.000 workshops weekly. That's how most people do it. But 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:55.000 they include things like disability identity, self- 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.000 advocacy, and I'll actually give you the list 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:02.000 here of all the different workshop topics. So the 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:05.000 workshop topics are an orientation, disability 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:08.000 identity, peer support, self-advocacy 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:11.000 , self-care, housing, technical 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:16.000 skills, budgeting and finance, transportation, and 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.000 time use. We have photos here. One of three men stand 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:25.000 ing on the lawn outside the courthouse. Here's a group 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:28.000 of consumers playing with water balloons on the beach. We have 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:32.000 a woman getting into a tax 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.000 i, and a mother and daughter in their power 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:38.000 chairs wheeling on a trail. So community 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 living skills is kind of the first step in the 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:45.000 workshop series with Healthy 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:49.000 Community Living followed by the next 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:52.000 workshop which is living well in the community. The 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.000 orientation, goal-settle, 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:15.000 building support, healthy reactions, stay 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:18.000 ing on course, healthy communication, seeking information, 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:22.000 eating well, physical activity, advocacy 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:25.000 , and maintenance. And we have some photos here of 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:28.000 a mother and her son getting ice cream from an ice 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:31.000 cream truck. So people participate in adaptive yoga 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:35.000 . A man wheeling through the airport in a manual 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:38.000 chair. And then someone in a power chair get 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:42.000 ting off of what looks like par 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:45.000 a transit. Also included -- next 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:48.000 slide. Is a facilitating groups train 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.000 ing. The facilitating groups training is something we want 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:54.000 ed to highlight. Because it seems like this is the online groups are 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:57.000 a nice way to connect with consumers, via 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:01.000 Zoom, especially now that most of us are home and 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:04.000 that people are more isolated. So the facilitating groups train 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:07.000 ing is an online facilitator train lg 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:10.000 ing program that allows you to learn at your own 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:13.000 pace. It's intended for professional development and train 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:17.000 ing of Centers for independent Living staff 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:20.000 or other organization staff. It helps you learn general tips and skills to be 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:23.000 a strong facilitator of any group or workshop. 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:27.000 Doesn't have to be specific to the programs that we offer 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:31.000 . It's not specific to working with 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:34.000 CLS or the Living Well in the Community 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:38.000 . Just to help guide facilitators to learn 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:41.000 guide and 00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:44.000 improve their skills.. this is a screen 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:47.000 shot of what the facilitating group 00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:50.000 s training looks like. Just to get a sense 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:54.000 of what's included. Next slide. And I'll go over some of the 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:57.000 topics. So the facilitate l 00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:00.000 ing groups include foundations, relationships -- 00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:03.000 oops. Yep. Active listening 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:08.000 , behavior change, sharing your story, 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:11.000 asking questions, accessibility, direct 00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:14.000 communication, referrals and then 00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:17.000 facilitator self-care. Each of these topic areas has 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:20.000 information for facilitators on that topic. And 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:23.000 this slide includes some photos of people at the 00:16:23.000 --> 00:16:27.000 APRIL conference last year in a workshop. Everyone 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:31.000 's raising their hand and holding up different signs. We have another 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:34.000 group of what looks like a peer group 00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:37.000 talking. A woman with her service dog. We have a 00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:40.000 group of people in a workshop playing with a beach ball. And 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:43.000 then some students in a class watching 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:46.000 a presenter as well. Next 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:50.000 slide. In addition to the 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:53.000 community living skills, living well in the community, and the 00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:57.000 facilitating groups training, we're also hoping to add 00:16:57.000 --> 00:17:00.000 working well with a disability in January of 2021 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:03.000 . Working Well with a Disability is meant to build 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:06.000 on the living Well in the Community 00:17:06.000 --> 00:17:09.000 program. Working well focuses on the balance between 00:17:09.000 --> 00:17:12.000 heflt and transition to employment, or balancing health and 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:16.000 employment. And the program is still in development, but it should 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:19.000 be available by January of 2021. 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:23.000 Next slide. I've included a quick screenshot of 00:17:23.000 --> 00:17:26.000 what Working Well with a Disability 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:29.000 will look like. It's very much in progress. We're excited to add it. Next 00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:34.000 slide. And the working well topics 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:37.000 include an orientation, working for your values, the 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:41.000 great balancing act, stress in working well, the power 00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:44.000 of advocacy, balancing through physical 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:47.000 activity, eating well to live well, and maintaining a 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:51.000 healthy balance. These -- there are some photos here with 00:17:51.000 --> 00:17:54.000 working well. One includes a desk with 00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:58.000 two computer screens. Another is 00:17:58.000 --> 00:18:02.000 two women sitting at a panel at a table, which I believe is also the 00:18:02.000 --> 00:18:05.000 APRIL conference. A woman sitting in front of her computer 00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.000 . And then two people sitting together working on the lab top 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:12.000 laptop. And 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:21.000 And with that, I would love to turn it over to Edgar 00:18:21.000 --> 00:18:25.000 mor al es. Dori and Edgar have 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:28.000 facilitating community living skills and 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:31.000 living well in the community. We're going to hear from them about 00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:35.000 what it's like to facilitate those programs and workshops and 00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:37.000 they will talk to you about their personal experiences. With that I will turn 00:18:37.000 --> 00:18:41.000 it over to Edgar. >> 00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:45.000 Hey everyone. My name is Edgar Morales 00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:48.000 . And I'm the independent living skills 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:52.000 specialist at the Colorado Springs center. I have 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:55.000 facilitated the healthy community living for about two years 00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.000 . As a facilitator I want to say that the 00:18:59.000 --> 00:19:02.000 sessions and the activities are easy and 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:05.000 so successful and very engaging. And the 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.000 consumers are wonderful and 00:19:09.000 --> 00:19:12.000 they participate. And you as a 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:15.000 facilitator, it's not very hard to 00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:20.000 facilitate because it is skills that we learn 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:23.000 ed to be independent. And 00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:26.000 so when you go in and you facilitate, you'll 00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:30.000 see the students and the consumers at the begin 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:33.000 ning, they learn and they help each 00:19:33.000 --> 00:19:37.000 other. You see all the successes 00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:40.000 that the -- the successes 00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:43.000 -- I have so many success stories. Like one 00:19:43.000 --> 00:19:46.000 participant attended the Eat 00:19:46.000 --> 00:19:49.000 ing Well. And after attending the Eat 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:52.000 ing Well class she said, because of this 00:19:52.000 --> 00:19:55.000 I started eating more healthier and I lost 00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:59.000 three pounds. And another participant 00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:03.000 attended the 00:20:03.000 --> 00:20:06.000 exercise one. And they -- 00:20:06.000 --> 00:20:10.000 she didn't really participate 00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:13.000 and was active. And after she attend 00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:16.000 ed the exercise one, she started running more and walking 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:19.000 more. She said, man, I am so 00:20:19.000 --> 00:20:22.000 active now and I'm so grateful for these 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:26.000 classes because these classes, although they teach independent 00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:30.000 living skills, it's like a peer support group. Because 00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:33.000 we become like a family. The at 00:20:33.000 --> 00:20:36.000 end they say is this over yet? Because I know it's 22 00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:39.000 weeks, but it really goes really fast. It 00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:42.000 really goes really fast because a lot of the consumers 00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:45.000 bond with each other. They become family. They help 00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:48.000 each other. They support each other. And that's 00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:53.000 what you see in the classes. You 00:20:53.000 --> 00:20:56.000 see growing from 00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:59.000 young to old. And it's just, 00:20:59.000 --> 00:21:02.000 like, you see these wow, you have 00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:06.000 changed. You have blossomed. And those are success 00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:09.000 es that you see when you teach these classes. And for 00:21:09.000 --> 00:21:12.000 me, myself, you also learn from these classes because 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:16.000 you also learn these skills that you 00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:19.000 might, oh, yeah, I can do this too. 00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:22.000 So as a facilitator you're also learning from these class sz 00:21:22.000 --> 00:21:26.000 es. So it is 00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:29.000 a -- the 00:21:29.000 --> 00:21:32.000 healthy community living class is great. First, we 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:35.000 support each other and 00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:39.000 second it's like a bonding experience. You see so many 00:21:39.000 --> 00:21:42.000 changes and so many wonderful things. And 00:21:42.000 --> 00:21:45.000 it's just very helpful. And it's 00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:48.000 just skills that will help you for a lifetime 00:21:48.000 --> 00:21:52.000 . It will be with you and you'll 00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:55.000 be able to use it all through your life. And 00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:58.000 it's so amazing as a facilitator 00:21:58.000 --> 00:22:01.000 it's just so great to 00:22:01.000 --> 00:22:04.000 see the changes that the consumers, 00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:07.000 and just lighting themselves. Man, I 00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:10.000 can do this. I can really do this. And 00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:13.000 maybe they never thought they would be able to do this. But with the 00:22:13.000 --> 00:22:16.000 support and the encouragement from the 00:22:16.000 --> 00:22:20.000 group, they are able to support and they are able to do these things 00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:23.000 . And they can take this that they have learned and 00:22:23.000 --> 00:22:26.000 take them and do it living their 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:29.000 own life. So as a facilitator this is a 00:22:29.000 --> 00:22:33.000 great curriculum and a wonderful experience if more consumer 00:22:33.000 --> 00:22:35.000 s. Like you should see all the changes and all the things 00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:38.000 that I have seen these two years. And it's just 00:22:38.000 --> 00:22:42.000 they blossom. It's just like a butterfly or like a 00:22:42.000 --> 00:22:45.000 caterpillar just blossoming, 00:22:45.000 --> 00:22:50.000 it's just a wonderful experience for all the con 00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:54.000 con 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:57.000 . For that I will pass the torch to Dori 00:22:57.000 --> 00:23:00.000 . >> Good afternoon everybody. I am 00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:04.000 so excited to be with you all today. What I love about the 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:07.000 healthy living community living curriculums is 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:11.000 it was designed by the people it serves. And 00:23:11.000 --> 00:23:14.000 what I mean by that -- >> Dori? >> I am excited 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:18.000 to say that I have been with the grant for 00:23:18.000 --> 00:23:21.000 five years (audio breaking up). 00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:24.000 I can't believe it, I was actually on the team that help 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:27.000 ed write the material. >> This is kim 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:30.000 . For whatever reason your audio just went really weird 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:34.000 . I know that it was clear previously 00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:38.000 . >> Is that any better Kim? >> Absolutely 00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:41.000 . Much better. Thank you. >> Dori: Sorry 00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:44.000 about that. I don't know what it is. I wanted to say to everybody 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:48.000 , first off, I am so excited to be here 00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:52.000 . I can't think of a better curriculum and 00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:55.000 foundation for infeint living than 00:23:55.000 --> 00:23:58.000 Healthy Community Living. I am honored 00:23:58.000 --> 00:24:01.000 to say I was a part of this collaboration from the beginning 00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:04.000 ning five years ago. I happened to be one of the 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:08.000 people who helped to write it. And now I'm 00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:11.000 one of the sites with my cofacilitator 00:24:11.000 --> 00:24:15.000 who facilitates it. And it really gets 00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:18.000 at the foundations of independent living. Independent 00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:22.000 living as it started was a peer-based model 00:24:22.000 --> 00:24:25.000 . And this curriculum is based on that 00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:29.000 . So not only are the facilitators 00:24:29.000 --> 00:24:32.000 people who are people with disability 00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:36.000 ies, but we are also the folks that created it, 00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:39.000 team members with and without disabilities that work at 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:43.000 Centers for Independent Living. And that I think is 00:24:43.000 --> 00:24:46.000 a tremendous asset to this curriculum. Because it was created 00:24:46.000 --> 00:24:49.000 by people who do this every day in our 00:24:49.000 --> 00:24:53.000 living. And I think what I found is 00:24:53.000 --> 00:24:56.000 so successful about this and what I 00:24:56.000 --> 00:24:59.000 hear from consumers every time they take the 00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:03.000 sessions is that they come out of it with 00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:06.000 disability pride T self-determination 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:09.000 , and the ability to 00:25:09.000 --> 00:25:12.000 self-advocate, not only for themselves, 00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:16.000 but for people with disabilities and the disability 00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:20.000 community as a whole. When 00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:22.000 What I love about it is we all are always 00:25:22.000 --> 00:25:26.000 trying to teach people the five 00:25:26.000 --> 00:25:30.000 core services of independent living. And this 00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:33.000 curriculum meets all of that. And that's such 00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:36.000 a tremendous asset because it's less time 00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:39.000 out of your schedule to have the 00:25:39.000 --> 00:25:42.000 to put materials together. I can speak to that, 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:47.000 because for our Center for Independent 00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:49.000 living under my role, I actually create independent 00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:53.000 living skills trainings for 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:56.000 individuals with disabilities on a variety of topics 00:25:56.000 --> 00:25:59.000 that consumers choose. What I liked about this, is 00:25:59.000 --> 00:26:02.000 this hits on all of the major topics that 00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:05.000 we want individuals to get out of independent living 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:09.000 . And not the idea that everybody 00:26:09.000 --> 00:26:12.000 does everything on their own. But that you are in the 00:26:12.000 --> 00:26:15.000 driver's seat for how you want to carry out the 00:26:15.000 --> 00:26:18.000 activities of independent living. You are 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:21.000 in the driver's seat for how you want to advocate 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:24.000 for the things that you want and need and the 00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:27.000 goals that you want to achieve. And 00:26:27.000 --> 00:26:30.000 not only does it do all of that, but then 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:34.000 we as facilitators do those goals with the 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:37.000 consumers as part of the curriculum. And 00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:40.000 that's such a tremendous asset, because then 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:44.000 they don't see us as facilitators, they 00:26:44.000 --> 00:26:47.000 see us as their peers. And 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:50.000 that's really as Ed Roberts 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:53.000 would have told you, that's exactly what he wanted out of 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:56.000 Centers for Independent 00:26:56.000 --> 00:27:01.000 Living. What I have found successful over the two years that we've been 00:27:01.000 --> 00:27:04.000 facilitating the curriculum is No. 1, 00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:07.000 they all want it to go longer. In the begin 00:27:07.000 --> 00:27:10.000 ning they are, like, 11 weeks 00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:13.000 ? Another 11 weeks? But then the second session they're 00:27:13.000 --> 00:27:16.000 , like, I hope this doesn't end any time soon 00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:20.000 . Because they end up facilitating a 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:23.000 peer bond amongst themselves. And 00:27:23.000 --> 00:27:27.000 where I have found this to be a tremendous asset also is with 00:27:27.000 --> 00:27:30.000 Coronavirus. The disability community, 00:27:30.000 --> 00:27:34.000 we are being isolated more, we are 00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:37.000 away from the people that we love more. Those of us 00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:40.000 in institutionalized settings don't have 00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:44.000 access to some of the community resources we might otherwise 00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:47.000 . And so I'm seeing individuals that are taking 00:27:47.000 --> 00:27:50.000 part in our classes right now 00:27:50.000 --> 00:27:54.000 . We were able to successfully with the help of APRIL 00:27:54.000 --> 00:27:57.000 and the University of Montana all of us 00:27:57.000 --> 00:28:01.000 that are facilitating move our classes online 00:28:01.000 --> 00:28:04.000 using Zoom. So what another tremendous 00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:08.000 asset moving forward, whether it's Corona 00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:11.000 virus or not, think of how many more people 00:28:11.000 --> 00:28:14.000 we can reach that otherwise may not be able to get to our 00:28:14.000 --> 00:28:17.000 centers because they live in rural areas without 00:28:17.000 --> 00:28:20.000 transportation. So I really 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:23.000 think what a beneficial thing that this 00:28:23.000 --> 00:28:26.000 could do for all of us. The areas where 00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:29.000 I've seen consumers have success within our organization 00:28:29.000 --> 00:28:33.000 , we not only took the foundations of the 00:28:33.000 --> 00:28:37.000 curriculum, my friends, but then we tailored it to meet the 00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:40.000 needs of our specific communities, our 00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:44.000 specific regions. So we looked -- we took the basics 00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:47.000 of the transportation session. And then 00:28:47.000 --> 00:28:50.000 we tailored it and added in our own 00:28:50.000 --> 00:28:53.000 state transportation models because we had people from 00:28:53.000 --> 00:28:57.000 all over the state take the class, both 00:28:57.000 --> 00:29:00.000 virtually and in person. And then be able 00:29:00.000 --> 00:29:03.000 to tailor it to their needs, and what they 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:07.000 need within our region. So even if you are in 00:29:07.000 --> 00:29:10.000 South Dakota or Georgia or 00:29:10.000 --> 00:29:13.000 New York or California, you can tailor 00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:16.000 this to your community. What 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:19.000 a great thing, right? Without us all having to create it from 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:22.000 the ground up. And then for us I'm going 00:29:22.000 --> 00:29:26.000 to share with you some specifics that we happen to have 00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:29.000 . One of our consumers, 00:29:29.000 --> 00:29:32.000 after the first six weeks of the 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:36.000 class, started saving money for their own 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:39.000 accessible vehicle and modifications 00:29:39.000 --> 00:29:42.000 to her vehicle and said to us, I didn't think I could do that prior to 00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:45.000 this class. I didn't think I had the 00:29:45.000 --> 00:29:51.000 self-determination within my self. And she did 00:29:51.000 --> 00:29:54.000 . Then we had several individuals who had never 00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:58.000 utilized ride share like Uber and 00:29:58.000 --> 00:30:01.000 Lyft embark on it. And one of these individuals was a 00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:04.000 high schooler who was 00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:07.000 part of his IEP goals was 00:30:07.000 --> 00:30:10.000 able to take the course and use it as part of his transition 00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:13.000 plan. So here's another way you might be able to work with your local 00:30:13.000 --> 00:30:17.000 school systems to make that integrate 00:30:17.000 --> 00:30:20.000 successfully. This is an individual with significant 00:30:20.000 --> 00:30:23.000 disabilities who was able after this 00:30:23.000 --> 00:30:27.000 course to take ride share to and from 00:30:27.000 --> 00:30:31.000 our classes, to places in the community, 00:30:31.000 --> 00:30:34.000 to places of school- 00:30:34.000 --> 00:30:37.000 related, and what 00:30:37.000 --> 00:30:40.000 a big deal for him. Because the social cueing and 00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:44.000 socialization skills were not something that came easy to him. 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:47.000 So we really worked on that too as part of the class. And 00:30:47.000 --> 00:30:50.000 then he felt more comfortable doing so. We had 00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:54.000 another person who as a result of the 00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:57.000 transportation lesson said they would never, ever 00:30:57.000 --> 00:31:00.000 travel outside the state of South Carolina. They didn't 00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:03.000 like the idea that with their dis 00:31:03.000 --> 00:31:07.000 ability and a spinal cord injury they would not 00:31:07.000 --> 00:31:10.000 feel in control of being put on a 00:31:10.000 --> 00:31:13.000 transfer board and other things like that to get on an 00:31:13.000 --> 00:31:17.000 airplane. And as a result of the course, they took 00:31:17.000 --> 00:31:21.000 a trip to the West Coast. And really, I think 00:31:21.000 --> 00:31:23.000 what I've seen that is so monument 00:31:23.000 --> 00:31:27.000 al and integral of this course is 00:31:27.000 --> 00:31:30.000 just the change in individuals. The change in their belief 00:31:30.000 --> 00:31:33.000 of themselves ls. The change in their abilities to self-advocate 00:31:33.000 --> 00:31:37.000 and communicate with family members, friends, 00:31:37.000 --> 00:31:41.000 service providers, and ultimate 00:31:41.000 --> 00:31:44.000 ly I think the one phenomenal thing that I didn't 00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:48.000 put on the slide, u I did want 00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:51.000 to share is we had an individual who had a healthy 00:31:51.000 --> 00:31:55.000 living goal of being able to feed people in 00:31:55.000 --> 00:31:58.000 her community. It was right before COVID struck. And being able 00:31:58.000 --> 00:32:01.000 to reach out to those who have 00:32:01.000 --> 00:32:04.000 some food inequities and lack of being 00:32:04.000 --> 00:32:07.000 able to find food resources. And she 00:32:07.000 --> 00:32:11.000 developed a whole plan as a result of this 00:32:11.000 --> 00:32:18.000 course to work with the community entity to 00:32:18.000 --> 00:32:21.000 provide food to individuals with disabilities and other people who don't feed themselves 00:32:21.000 --> 00:32:25.000 identifying as people with disabilities. And she and 00:32:25.000 --> 00:32:28.000 that partner got together, and now they're distributing food to the 00:32:28.000 --> 00:32:32.000 community. I have 00:32:32.000 --> 00:32:35.000 a picture on the slide. And it's a picture of 00:32:35.000 --> 00:32:38.000 a participant. And she learned to 00:32:38.000 --> 00:32:42.000 use para tran sit as a result of the course. And 00:32:42.000 --> 00:32:45.000 she learned about the Americans With 00:32:45.000 --> 00:32:48.000 Disabilities Act related to the course and how it impacts 00:32:48.000 --> 00:32:51.000 your ability to use transportation. And she 00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:55.000 said it's a picture of her on the lift on the 00:32:55.000 --> 00:32:59.000 para transit vehicle and it says 00:32:59.000 --> 00:33:02.000 hashtag thanks to the ADA, I have 00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:05.000 access to accessible transportation, allowing me 00:33:05.000 --> 00:33:09.000 to work, shop, and live in my community 00:33:09.000 --> 00:33:11.000 . And I think if that doesn't highlight it all, 00:33:11.000 --> 00:33:16.000 that's what this is about, and I think all of us 00:33:16.000 --> 00:33:19.000 can say if all of our 00:33:19.000 --> 00:33:23.000 consumers can benefit like the ones that 00:33:23.000 --> 00:33:25.000 can benefit from across the country where it's 00:33:25.000 --> 00:33:29.000 been facilitated at different centers 00:33:29.000 --> 00:33:32.000 for independent living, imagine the numbers of people 00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:35.000 we could impact if this was national at 00:33:35.000 --> 00:33:38.000 every center for independent living and every disability 00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:42.000 organization. And at the end of the day, I want 00:33:42.000 --> 00:33:45.000 to thank APRIL and the University of Montana for the 00:33:45.000 --> 00:33:48.000 opportunity to not only help write the curriculum, but 00:33:48.000 --> 00:33:51.000 to actually get to see it put into play 00:33:51.000 --> 00:33:55.000 by facilitating. And I can never say enough 00:33:55.000 --> 00:33:58.000 about this curriculum to all of you. So I hope 00:33:58.000 --> 00:34:02.000 you all will consider utilizing it as your 00:34:02.000 --> 00:34:05.000 organization, because at the end of the day, when we 00:34:05.000 --> 00:34:08.000 make individuals independent, then we truly 00:34:08.000 --> 00:34:12.000 create an inclusive community and society. 00:34:12.000 --> 00:34:18.000 Thank you 00:34:18.000 --> 00:34:22.000 . >> Okay thank you Dori and Edgar. I am 00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:25.000 so lucky to get to work with both of you every day 00:34:25.000 --> 00:34:28.000 . We're going to talk a little bit about the program, how 00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:32.000 you get it, how you have 00:34:32.000 --> 00:34:35.000 it at your organization. So how to get the healthy 00:34:35.000 --> 00:34:38.000 community living program. And we will talk about 00:37:08.000 --> 00:37:11.000 some national partners who have focused on just using this 00:37:11.000 --> 00:37:14.000 program on Zoom with their consumers. So lots 00:37:14.000 --> 00:37:17.000 of different applications and opportunities. 00:37:17.000 --> 00:37:20.000 I also wanted to give -- next slide -- a 00:37:20.000 --> 00:37:23.000 special thanks to all independent living partners 00:37:23.000 --> 00:37:26.000 who have worked with us throughout this project. We are in the 00:37:26.000 --> 00:37:30.000 fifth year of this project. And we've had so many 00:37:30.000 --> 00:37:33.000 amazing partners, I just can't say enough 00:37:33.000 --> 00:37:36.000 great things about everyone who helped us with this project 00:37:36.000 --> 00:37:39.000 . Truly, thank you all. And I won't read every single one 00:37:39.000 --> 00:37:43.000 of these, but I just a special thanks 00:37:43.000 --> 00:37:46.000 to everyone who has helped us with this program. It's been so 00:37:46.000 --> 00:37:49.000 wonderful, and we're so excited that hopefully we'll 00:37:49.000 --> 00:37:54.000 -- more people will start to use it and benefit from it as well 00:37:54.000 --> 00:37:57.000 . So a special thanks to all our 00:37:57.000 --> 00:38:01.000 partners. And then I also wanted to share -- we wanted 00:38:01.000 --> 00:38:04.000 to share our presenter contact information. Here's 00:38:04.000 --> 00:38:07.000 my e-mail address and Edgar 00:38:07.000 --> 00:38:11.000 's and Dori's. So if you do have questions or you're 00:38:11.000 --> 00:38:14.000 wondering about facilitation of the program or what that looks 00:38:14.000 --> 00:38:18.000 like in either Colorado or South Carolina, 00:38:18.000 --> 00:38:21.000 please feel free to reach out to Edgar or Dori or 00:38:21.000 --> 00:38:24.000 if you have questions about healthy community living 00:38:24.000 --> 00:38:27.000 in general, please reach out to me. I'm always happy to hear from 00:38:27.000 --> 00:38:30.000 you. So our e-mail addresses are here 00:38:30.000 --> 00:38:33.000 . And we'll also be at the virtual booth like I said 00:38:33.000 --> 00:38:37.000 after this presentation today. And 00:38:37.000 --> 00:38:40.000 with that, I think we will turn it over 00:38:40.000 --> 00:38:44.000 to the last slide and for questions, comments, reactions 00:38:44.000 --> 00:38:47.000 . We would love to hear what you guys are thinking, if you have 00:38:47.000 --> 00:38:50.000 questions for any of the presenters. Thank you 00:38:50.000 --> 00:38:53.000 so much. >> Hi, 00:38:53.000 --> 00:38:56.000 this is Kim. I'm going to leave my 00:38:56.000 --> 00:38:59.000 video off so you guys 00:38:59.000 --> 00:39:02.000 can talk without me there. So the first question 00:39:02.000 --> 00:39:06.000 I think you've answered already. Could we mreetz get the 00:39:06.000 --> 00:39:09.000 link for the facilitating groups training? >> Tannis: 00:39:09.000 --> 00:39:12.000 Yes, so all the programs go through the 00:39:12.000 --> 00:39:15.000 healthy community living website. And that's healthy 00:39:15.000 --> 00:39:20.000 communityliving.com. And you'll -- in order 00:39:20.000 --> 00:39:23.000 to actually see the program you have to purchase a license 00:39:23.000 --> 00:39:26.000 . So once you purchase a license u, you 00:39:26.000 --> 00:39:29.000 will get credentials like we did for the APRIL 00:39:29.000 --> 00:39:33.000 conference, where you log in and then you're able to see everything. The 00:39:33.000 --> 00:39:37.000 facilitating groups training is highlighted on the website on the 00:39:37.000 --> 00:39:40.000 tab where it says "facilitator 00:39:40.000 --> 00:39:45.000 login" 00:39:45.000 --> 00:39:48.000 . >> Is there a program like these but focus 00:39:48.000 --> 00:39:52.000 sing on youth transitions? >> 00:39:52.000 --> 00:39:56.000 >> Tannis: We wrote community 00:39:56.000 --> 00:39:59.000 living skills with youth in transition in mind. So I think the community 00:39:59.000 --> 00:40:02.000 living skills could be a very nice program and workshop for working with 00:40:02.000 --> 00:40:05.000 youth in transition. And Edgar, did you maybe 00:40:05.000 --> 00:40:09.000 want to respond to that? >> 00:40:09.000 --> 00:40:13.000 Edgar: Yes, so as a facilitator, it's written 00:40:13.000 --> 00:40:16.000 so you can cater to the 00:40:16.000 --> 00:40:19.000 audience. So it's easy to cater it. So you can make it for 00:40:19.000 --> 00:40:22.000 youth or for older individuals. So it's just -- 00:40:22.000 --> 00:40:27.000 so it could be for anybody 00:40:27.000 --> 00:40:30.000 . >> Dori: I would add to that that more than 00:40:30.000 --> 00:40:34.000 half of our participants have been 00:40:34.000 --> 00:40:37.000 young adults in transition age. And they've 00:40:37.000 --> 00:40:40.000 loved class. A lot of courses we've 00:40:40.000 --> 00:40:44.000 held have been a mixture. You know what's phenomenal 00:40:44.000 --> 00:40:47.000 about that? They learn from each other. And I think that's 00:40:47.000 --> 00:40:50.000 an experience that's invaluable for any of us, being 00:40:50.000 --> 00:40:53.000 able to learn from our peers, from a variety of backgrounds 00:40:53.000 --> 00:40:59.000 , from a variety of cultures, from a variety 00:40:59.000 --> 00:41:02.000 of ages and different places in life. So I would 00:41:02.000 --> 00:41:06.000 say this was really tailored and written to 00:41:06.000 --> 00:41:09.000 use with any age group like Edgar says. We found 00:41:09.000 --> 00:41:14.000 success with just about everyone with it 00:41:14.000 --> 00:41:17.000 . >> Kim: The next question comes from Mandy. I 00:41:17.000 --> 00:41:20.000 apologize for not saying who asked the questions. 00:41:20.000 --> 00:41:24.000 I will be facilitating an empowerment 00:41:24.000 --> 00:41:27.000 resilience virtual group for people with disabilities 00:41:27.000 --> 00:41:30.000 . What would be the best way to have the initial session and 00:41:30.000 --> 00:41:33.000 develop topics that people are interested in? Do I have the 00:41:33.000 --> 00:41:36.000 topics conversations during the first session? Then any 00:41:36.000 --> 00:41:40.000 recommendations for how many times we meet? I want it to be 00:41:40.000 --> 00:41:53.000 semistructured but also consumer driven 00:41:53.000 --> 00:41:56.000 . >> Edgar: You can tell the topics 00:41:56.000 --> 00:42:00.000 at the beginning. They will get the topics at the begin 00:42:00.000 --> 00:42:04.000 ning. It will say the topics. So you can 00:42:04.000 --> 00:42:10.000 discuss, especially with the first one, 00:42:10.000 --> 00:42:13.000 you can -- how can I say it? You can mrak 00:42:13.000 --> 00:42:16.000 it so it will work for your students. So whatever 00:42:16.000 --> 00:42:20.000 works for them you can cater to them. 00:42:20.000 --> 00:42:23.000 So if they want to do exercise first, they can do 00:42:23.000 --> 00:42:26.000 exercise first. Now in the second 00:42:26.000 --> 00:42:29.000 one, in the second one session you have to 00:42:29.000 --> 00:42:33.000 go in order but in the first session you can change topics 00:42:33.000 --> 00:42:37.000 any way that the consumers want 00:42:37.000 --> 00:42:41.000 . If that makes sense 00:42:41.000 --> 00:42:44.000 . >> Tannis: Yeah, so community living skills -- 00:42:44.000 --> 00:42:47.000 and I just pulled up the slide so you can see the toip 00:42:47.000 --> 00:42:50.000 ices. It's written so there's no -- 00:42:50.000 --> 00:42:53.000 there's no order. You can do and 00:42:53.000 --> 00:42:57.000 start where ever people are most interested. And maybe your 00:42:57.000 --> 00:43:00.000 group only wants to do five of those workshops, ublgd 00:43:00.000 --> 00:43:03.000 you could only do five. It's 00:43:03.000 --> 00:43:07.000 kind of choose your own adventure in that way. Whereas 00:43:07.000 --> 00:43:10.000 living well in the community, and I'll actually skip 00:43:10.000 --> 00:43:14.000 to that slide so you can see those topics one more time too. So 00:43:14.000 --> 00:43:17.000 living well in the community workshop topics are 00:43:17.000 --> 00:43:20.000 more -- they build on each other. So you start with an orientation to help 00:43:20.000 --> 00:43:24.000 people understand where it's -- what the workshop 00:43:24.000 --> 00:43:27.000 's about. Then in the second workshop they're citing 00:43:27.000 --> 00:43:31.000 a goal. So things kind of build from that original goal 00:43:31.000 --> 00:43:34.000 . So that is more lin 00:43:34.000 --> 00:43:37.000 ier 00:43:37.000 --> 00:43:41.000 ear, but you can add to it like things 00:43:41.000 --> 00:43:44.000 that Dori talked about. Things specific to your 00:43:44.000 --> 00:43:47.000 community and consumers. Dori, do you want to respond 00:43:47.000 --> 00:43:50.000 too? >> Dori: Yeah, I was just going to 00:43:50.000 --> 00:43:54.000 add, listening to the group that you were specifically addressing, it's 00:43:54.000 --> 00:43:58.000 really great with the topics that you were mentioning to 00:43:58.000 --> 00:44:01.000 start probably with disability 00:44:01.000 --> 00:44:04.000 identity, and really looking at who they are as individuals 00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:09.000 and who they are as a group. Because 00:44:09.000 --> 00:44:13.000 they group -- we've done this for two years, all of us 00:44:13.000 --> 00:44:16.000 facilitators, and each group is a little bit different. So 00:44:16.000 --> 00:44:19.000 they take on their own kind of identity, which is a great thing. And 00:44:19.000 --> 00:44:22.000 they each have their own passions they bring to the table 00:44:22.000 --> 00:44:25.000 . And then I think it's really good to go from 00:44:25.000 --> 00:44:29.000 disability identity to find 00:44:29.000 --> 00:44:32.000 ing support and peer support. Because it helps 00:44:32.000 --> 00:44:36.000 that group to see where their foundation 00:44:36.000 --> 00:44:39.000 of offering peer support is. And then 00:44:39.000 --> 00:44:42.000 taking that kind of into 00:44:42.000 --> 00:44:46.000 self-advocacy realm. I found with the 00:44:46.000 --> 00:44:49.000 kind of group that you're discussing that when you start with those 00:44:49.000 --> 00:44:53.000 three and then maybe getting into self-care because 00:44:53.000 --> 00:44:56.000 that also is good for establish 00:44:56.000 --> 00:44:59.000 ing what I call, like, group structure. Because 00:44:59.000 --> 00:45:02.000 then we learn more about what helps 00:45:02.000 --> 00:45:06.000 individuals in the group to feel support 00:45:06.000 --> 00:45:09.000 ed, to know when they can take a break. To 00:45:09.000 --> 00:45:13.000 know how they can offer support to each other 00:45:13.000 --> 00:45:16.000 . And so I hope that's an answer for you 00:45:16.000 --> 00:45:19.000 . I found with groups that when we're establishing some of those 00:45:19.000 --> 00:45:23.000 , it really does -- even in the community 00:45:23.000 --> 00:45:26.000 living skills one, and for the type of group that you're referring to, 00:45:26.000 --> 00:45:30.000 to start with those four. Because they really set 00:45:30.000 --> 00:45:33.000 up what I call the group 00:45:33.000 --> 00:45:37.000 tone. The tone of the group. And where that group wants to go 00:45:37.000 --> 00:45:41.000 through the adventure of the courses 00:45:41.000 --> 00:45:44.000 . And that's a great thing. My co 00:45:44.000 --> 00:45:47.000 facilitator Sarah and I always comment to each 00:45:47.000 --> 00:45:50.000 other that no group that we've done in two years 00:45:50.000 --> 00:45:54.000 has been the exact same. And that's a good thing. It's 00:45:54.000 --> 00:45:57.000 really helpful to find each group's kind of niche 00:45:57.000 --> 00:46:02.000 and each group's kind of personality 00:46:02.000 --> 00:46:05.000 . >> Edgar: I want to add like Dori said, 00:46:05.000 --> 00:46:09.000 each group it becomes a separate 00:46:09.000 --> 00:46:12.000 little thing, because they have their own personality 00:46:12.000 --> 00:46:15.000 . So it's not going to be the same every single time. Because 00:46:15.000 --> 00:46:19.000 it all depends on each group because of how they bonded and everything 00:46:19.000 --> 00:46:23.000 . So they take the personalities 00:46:23.000 --> 00:46:26.000 , and it's an adventure. It's really an 00:46:26.000 --> 00:46:30.000 adventure just teaching these classes 00:46:30.000 --> 00:46:33.000 . >> Kim: Oops, sorry. >> Tannis: 00:46:33.000 --> 00:46:36.000 Sorry Kim. Since I'm screen sharing, I also think sometimes 00:46:36.000 --> 00:46:42.000 it's really hard to present on this program because we have so much 00:46:42.000 --> 00:46:44.000 . And it is a website. But I wanted to 00:46:44.000 --> 00:46:47.000 mention that the website, once you're in, 00:46:47.000 --> 00:46:50.000 so I'm now screen sharing and this is 00:46:50.000 --> 00:46:53.000 can the community Living Skills, what you would do in 00:46:53.000 --> 00:46:57.000 a workshop. And I wanted to demonstrate here that this is actually the 00:46:57.000 --> 00:47:00.000 workshop content that you go through and read to your 00:47:00.000 --> 00:47:03.000 consumers. So as a facilitator, you're 00:47:03.000 --> 00:47:07.000 trained and familiarizing yourself with this content, 00:47:07.000 --> 00:47:10.000 but you're literally presenting the information from the website 00:47:10.000 --> 00:47:13.000 . So this is the disability identity session 00:47:13.000 --> 00:47:16.000 . So if you were to present to a group, you can actually 00:47:16.000 --> 00:47:19.000 pull up what we call these cards or 00:47:19.000 --> 00:47:23.000 Power Point slides that walk you through the 00:47:23.000 --> 00:47:26.000 different content of the program. And this 00:47:26.000 --> 00:47:29.000 one has a video. So you can play the videos 00:47:29.000 --> 00:47:33.000 and you'll play videos and have discussions. And then there's 00:47:33.000 --> 00:47:36.000 also discussion questions and topics here within 00:47:36.000 --> 00:47:39.000 the website that are already set up for you to re 00:47:39.000 --> 00:47:42.000 view with your group. So as a facilitator, 00:47:42.000 --> 00:47:45.000 I think it's a really nice -- like Dori 00:47:45.000 --> 00:47:48.000 talked about not having to recreate the wheel so to 00:47:48.000 --> 00:47:51.000 speak in terms of coming up with independent living topics and 00:47:51.000 --> 00:47:54.000 content. Because this is done for you within 00:47:54.000 --> 00:47:58.000 the program. And so you're able to work your 00:47:58.000 --> 00:48:01.000 way through the tabs. You go from the introduction to dis 00:48:01.000 --> 00:48:04.000 closure. And present the content 00:48:04.000 --> 00:48:07.000 to your group from the website. And that can be done 00:48:07.000 --> 00:48:10.000 in person or through a platform like 00:48:10.000 --> 00:48:13.000 Zoom, which is how they're using it right now 00:48:13.000 --> 00:48:18.000 . So I think that might also just help clear up some questions 00:48:18.000 --> 00:48:22.000 . Okay. Sorry about that. Back to Kim 00:48:22.000 --> 00:48:25.000 . >> Kim: Okay. First Charlie 00:48:25.000 --> 00:48:29.000 starts barking. There's a couple things. I skipped 00:48:29.000 --> 00:48:32.000 a couple questions because I know these are yes/ 00:48:32.000 --> 00:48:35.000 no. From April 00:48:35.000 --> 00:48:39.000 Meredith is the healthy community living website 00:48:39.000 --> 00:48:43.000 an all content screen reader accessible 00:48:43.000 --> 00:48:48.000 ? >> Tannis: Yes 00:48:48.000 --> 00:48:52.000 . >> Kim: Okay. And then 00:48:52.000 --> 00:48:56.000 Joe, how can we get curriculum for our organization 00:48:56.000 --> 00:49:00.000 . I believe you answered that but just in case. >> 00:49:00.000 --> 00:49:02.000 Tannis: In order to purchase the -- I'm 00:49:02.000 --> 00:49:06.000 just going to go to the healthy community living.com 00:49:06.000 --> 00:49:10.000 . We're actually live on the website right now. You'll 00:49:10.000 --> 00:49:13.000 see here it's a welcome. You just click on " 00:49:13.000 --> 00:49:16.000 purchasing an HCL license" that's where 00:49:16.000 --> 00:49:19.000 you can click the live link. It'll give you a program guide 00:49:19.000 --> 00:49:23.000 that walks you through all the details of the entire program if you'd 00:49:23.000 --> 00:49:26.000 like to Doe download 00:49:26.000 --> 00:49:29.000 download that. And then click 00:49:29.000 --> 00:49:32.000 here on the "purchase healthy community 00:49:32.000 --> 00:49:35.000 living license". If your organization prefers not to 00:49:35.000 --> 00:49:39.000 use a credit card we can accept a 00:49:39.000 --> 00:49:42.000 purchase order. You just need to contact us directly for us 00:49:42.000 --> 00:49:45.000 to work that out. You can also e-mail the program at 00:49:45.000 --> 00:49:49.000 healthycommunityliving@ 00:49:49.000 --> 00:49:52.000 MSO. 00:49:52.000 --> 00:49:56.000 MT.EDU. And we can 00:49:56.000 --> 00:49:59.000 out how you'd like to purchase the program. So I think that should take 00:49:59.000 --> 00:50:02.000 care of that question. >> Kim: 00:50:02.000 --> 00:50:05.000 Okay, this comes from Melissa Norman is there a 00:50:05.000 --> 00:50:09.000 reduced price for single facile tar tors 00:50:09.000 --> 00:50:13.000 itators when there's only 00:50:13.000 --> 00:50:16.000 one person to facilitate groups? >> Tannis: We 00:50:16.000 --> 00:50:20.000 do have a link here on the website for reduced fee licensing 00:50:20.000 --> 00:50:22.000 . We do ask that you answer a few questions and fill 00:50:22.000 --> 00:50:25.000 out an application. So that is an option and 00:50:25.000 --> 00:50:30.000 that is also available through the website. 00:50:30.000 --> 00:50:33.000 >> Kim: Now I'm going to go 00:50:33.000 --> 00:50:37.000 back to John Wall asked: How do you reach out to 00:50:37.000 --> 00:50:40.000 get clients to take one of the Webinars if they do not have access 00:50:40.000 --> 00:50:44.000 to a computer. 00:50:44.000 --> 00:50:48.000 Also if they do how do you reach out to clients when there's client 00:50:48.000 --> 00:50:52.000 confidential laws to get around 00:50:52.000 --> 00:50:55.000 ? >> Tannis: Dori or Edgar, do you want to talk about that 00:50:55.000 --> 00:50:59.000 process? >> Edgar: What we've been doing is we've been use 00:50:59.000 --> 00:51:02.000 ing -- we've been using Zoom. And if they don't have 00:51:02.000 --> 00:51:05.000 access to internet or anything, we can call in 00:51:05.000 --> 00:51:08.000 . We can call in, and they will also mail 00:51:08.000 --> 00:51:12.000 in the Power Point or the 00:51:12.000 --> 00:51:16.000 worksheets so they will have it in front of them. So there's always 00:51:16.000 --> 00:51:19.000 an option. I know it's not going to be the same, but at least 00:51:19.000 --> 00:51:22.000 they will be able to call in. And we'll call them in. And 00:51:22.000 --> 00:51:25.000 we'll send them the Power Points. And 00:51:25.000 --> 00:51:28.000 activities. >> Dori 00:51:28.000 --> 00:51:32.000 : We do similar things to what Edgar 00:51:32.000 --> 00:51:35.000 's Center for Independent Live lg 00:51:35.000 --> 00:51:38.000 ing does. We reach out to consumers that are 00:51:38.000 --> 00:51:42.000 already in our 00:51:42.000 --> 00:51:46.000 CIL suite database and who are working with IL staff to talk about 00:51:46.000 --> 00:51:49.000 what goals do individuals have? Because a lot 00:51:49.000 --> 00:51:52.000 of goals individuals have match up with the 00:51:52.000 --> 00:51:56.000 curriculum. And between their independent 00:51:56.000 --> 00:51:59.000 living staff member and 00:51:59.000 --> 00:52:02.000 myself, we will call them, e-mail them, connect with them 00:52:02.000 --> 00:52:06.000 . We also reach out to par ner agencies 00:52:06.000 --> 00:52:10.000 who serve people with disabilities and allow them 00:52:10.000 --> 00:52:13.000 to be a part of the recruiting process. We 00:52:13.000 --> 00:52:17.000 also use social media, e 00:52:17.000 --> 00:52:20.000 blasts. Because we're not sharing anyone's information 00:52:20.000 --> 00:52:24.000 . I can only speak for my Center for 00:52:24.000 --> 00:52:27.000 Independent Living, but when they sign up for services 00:52:27.000 --> 00:52:30.000 , we have an option that 00:52:30.000 --> 00:52:34.000 they can sign up and waive their 00:52:34.000 --> 00:52:37.000 -- like agree to be sent things about programs and 00:52:37.000 --> 00:52:41.000 different things that we have. So we're not giving out anybody 00:52:41.000 --> 00:52:45.000 's health information. We have their permission to contact 00:52:45.000 --> 00:52:48.000 them, etc. Then let me tell you, people 00:52:48.000 --> 00:52:52.000 come out of the woodwork for it. They really want the class 00:52:52.000 --> 00:52:54.000 . And I think it's a 00:52:54.000 --> 00:52:58.000 good way to recruit -- it's also a good way 00:52:58.000 --> 00:53:01.000 to form community partnerships. I'm hoping when 00:53:01.000 --> 00:53:04.000 COVID ends -- which is not now -- that we might 00:53:04.000 --> 00:53:09.000 even be able to go to other community entities and 00:53:09.000 --> 00:53:12.000 partner up and offer the course. It's just right 00:53:12.000 --> 00:53:15.000 now with COVID and when we were piloting 00:53:15.000 --> 00:53:18.000 we did a lot of it at our center just because we knew we had the 00:53:18.000 --> 00:53:22.000 technology to show it in the office and didn't have 00:53:22.000 --> 00:53:25.000 to worry about that. The 00:53:25.000 --> 00:53:28.000 other thing I wanted to point out that 00:53:28.000 --> 00:53:32.000 I think Tannis touched on it, but I wanted to share why this 00:53:32.000 --> 00:53:35.000 part is so important. She mentioned that all the 00:53:35.000 --> 00:53:39.000 images are a real people. 00:53:39.000 --> 00:53:42.000 The videos and the pictures are real people with disability 00:53:42.000 --> 00:53:45.000 ies who have strived to 00:53:45.000 --> 00:53:49.000 reach goals for independent 00:53:49.000 --> 00:53:52.000 living. And it's phenomenal. Because our folks have 00:53:52.000 --> 00:53:55.000 loved these videos. They're like, that's me on the 00:53:55.000 --> 00:53:58.000 screen. That's me living my life. It's not a video 00:53:58.000 --> 00:54:02.000 created by Hollywood 00:54:02.000 --> 00:54:05.000 that uses inspiration porn and ablism and 00:54:05.000 --> 00:54:08.000 other things to get people's attention about disability 00:54:08.000 --> 00:54:11.000 ies. These are actual people with disabilities 00:54:11.000 --> 00:54:15.000 who have been where our participants are 00:54:15.000 --> 00:54:18.000 , trying to reach goals and how they strive to 00:54:18.000 --> 00:54:21.000 reach them. And also the failures they had 00:54:21.000 --> 00:54:25.000 in trying to achieve some of the goals and all the 00:54:25.000 --> 00:54:28.000 different topic areas. And the videos are captioned 00:54:28.000 --> 00:54:31.000 . They're what my consumer said they like it -- 00:54:31.000 --> 00:54:34.000 we had a class today right before I got here. And 00:54:34.000 --> 00:54:38.000 they said, you know what we like about the video Dori? Is 00:54:38.000 --> 00:54:42.000 that they're straight to the point, brief, and they're 00:54:42.000 --> 00:54:45.000 done in plain language where anybody can 00:54:45.000 --> 00:54:49.000 understand. And at the end of the day, that is 00:54:49.000 --> 00:54:52.000 instrumental for people to 00:54:52.000 --> 00:54:55.000 achieve success. To me I go back to 00:54:55.000 --> 00:54:59.000 Ed Roberts and the founders for Centers 00:54:59.000 --> 00:55:02.000 for Independence, they were all about learning from your peers 00:55:02.000 --> 00:55:05.000 . And that's what this course is. And those videos are such 00:55:05.000 --> 00:55:08.000 a testament to that. When you have consumers say to you, 00:55:08.000 --> 00:55:12.000 look at -- here's me. That's me on the screen 00:55:12.000 --> 00:55:15.000 . They may not have the same disability as me, but they 00:55:15.000 --> 00:55:19.000 not be from the same state or have the 00:55:19.000 --> 00:55:23.000 exact same background, but they understand what I am trying 00:55:23.000 --> 00:55:26.000 to achieve. And they showed me the success they've had, and 00:55:26.000 --> 00:55:29.000 the failure, but they got back 00:55:29.000 --> 00:55:33.000 up and found another way to problem solve. And 00:55:33.000 --> 00:55:36.000 that's great. Because how many of us -- if you're 00:55:36.000 --> 00:55:39.000 my generation, I am in my fif tees. 00:55:39.000 --> 00:55:43.000 ties 00:55:43.000 --> 00:55:46.000 . We didn't have that to look at. Whether we were 00:55:46.000 --> 00:55:49.000 young adults or adults, it's only recently we've 00:55:49.000 --> 00:55:52.000 gotten to see some of that within the last ten years. I'm 00:55:52.000 --> 00:55:55.000 really telling you this curriculum really packs it autol 00:55:55.000 --> 00:55:59.000 it all 00:55:59.000 --> 00:56:02.000 all and leaves a last 00:56:02.000 --> 00:56:05.000 ing impression. I've had consumers that took the class two years 00:56:05.000 --> 00:56:08.000 ago to tell me they achieved their goals 00:56:08.000 --> 00:56:12.000 they set out in the beginning of the course. I think that's a testament to the 00:56:12.000 --> 00:56:15.000 class itself. >> Edgar: 00:56:15.000 --> 00:56:19.000 To piggyback off that, yeah, 00:56:19.000 --> 00:56:22.000 look at how many goals they're working on and how many things 00:56:22.000 --> 00:56:25.000 they accomplish. Since they have a 00:56:25.000 --> 00:56:30.000 support system, they can reach those goals without being 00:56:30.000 --> 00:56:33.000 afraid, without being judged and other stuff 00:56:33.000 --> 00:56:36.000 . All these sessions are different goals that each person is 00:56:36.000 --> 00:56:39.000 working. So 22 00:56:39.000 --> 00:56:43.000 goals that they can accomplish. And you'll 00:56:43.000 --> 00:56:47.000 see their eyes and their passion. I did this all 00:56:47.000 --> 00:56:50.000 by myself. And look, my family support 00:56:50.000 --> 00:56:55.000 ing me and I did this. And yeah 00:56:55.000 --> 00:56:59.000 . >> Kim: This is Kim again. And 00:56:59.000 --> 00:57:02.000 this is probably going to be the last question because I know 00:57:02.000 --> 00:57:05.000 you guys are running out of time. This comes 00:57:05.000 --> 00:57:09.000 from Martha 00:57:09.000 --> 00:57:12.000 mason, we will 00:57:12.000 --> 00:57:16.000 cover online groups or is this just an ad 00:57:16.000 --> 00:57:19.000 that you guys are talking about? >> 00:57:19.000 --> 00:57:22.000 Tannis: I 00:57:22.000 --> 00:57:25.000 guess it's not just an ad. So the 00:57:25.000 --> 00:57:28.000 facilitating groups training is a specific training 00:57:28.000 --> 00:57:31.000 that people can do, and it's included. So if you 00:57:31.000 --> 00:57:36.000 purchase a license for Healthy Community Living you get the 00:57:36.000 --> 00:57:39.000 facilitating groups training, and you can have your staff -- 00:57:39.000 --> 00:57:43.000 you can have a number of staff go through that training if you'd like. You 00:57:43.000 --> 00:57:46.000 also get community living skills, living well in the 00:57:46.000 --> 00:57:49.000 community, and working well. So you pay the one- 00:57:49.000 --> 00:57:52.000 time $500, and then you're able to 00:57:52.000 --> 00:57:55.000 access those four programs. The fa 00:57:55.000 --> 00:57:58.000 cilitating Groups 00:57:58.000 --> 00:58:01.000 Training. I can review. Goes through the topics 00:58:01.000 --> 00:58:04.000 that we talked about. Let me actually go back to the 00:58:04.000 --> 00:58:08.000 Power Point here. So the facilitating groups train 00:58:08.000 --> 00:58:12.000 ing walks facilitators through 00:58:12.000 --> 00:58:16.000 essentially the foundations, relationships, active listening, 00:58:16.000 --> 00:58:19.000 behavior change, sharing your story, asking questions, direct 00:58:19.000 --> 00:58:22.000 communication, referrals, self-care, and accessibility 00:58:22.000 --> 00:58:25.000 . And it's just really geared towards how to 00:58:25.000 --> 00:58:29.000 facilitate a workshop in general. We cowrote 00:58:29.000 --> 00:58:32.000 it with the Association and Programs for Rural 00:58:32.000 --> 00:58:36.000 Independent Living. Our wonderful Mary 00:58:36.000 --> 00:58:39.000 Willard who helps us draw on her skills 00:58:39.000 --> 00:58:42.000 as well adds her skills facilitating groups 00:58:42.000 --> 00:58:45.000 to create this workshop. And training. I think it's a 00:58:45.000 --> 00:58:48.000 really nice training for independent living staff. It's kind of 00:58:48.000 --> 00:58:53.000 a newer addition to the Healthy Community 00:58:53.000 --> 00:58:56.000 Living program. 00:58:56.000 --> 00:59:04.000 So I don't know if that answers your question, but I hope so 00:59:04.000 --> 00:59:07.000 . >> Kim: Okay Tannis we're 00:59:07.000 --> 00:59:10.000 out of time. And so before I 00:59:10.000 --> 00:59:13.000 give you your final thoughts, I sdwrus 00:59:13.000 --> 00:59:16.000 I just want to remind everyone 00:59:16.000 --> 00:59:19.000 to fill out the evaluations. It relly provides 00:59:19.000 --> 00:59:22.000 feedback on different things. And the link is 00:59:22.000 --> 00:59:26.000 there on breakout sessions, but you can 00:59:26.000 --> 00:59:29.000 also find it on your conference tab. I'll let you close out 00:59:29.000 --> 00:59:32.000 Tannis. >> Tannis: Awesome. Well I know this is a lot 00:59:32.000 --> 00:59:36.000 of information to try and cover especially in an hour. I want to give another 00:59:36.000 --> 00:59:39.000 huge shout-out and thank you to Dori and Edgar for joining 00:59:39.000 --> 00:59:42.000 me today. And if you have more questions, we will be 00:59:42.000 --> 00:59:45.000 at our vendor table for about the next hour and 00:59:45.000 --> 00:59:48.000 a half. Happy to answer more questions there. Really happy to 00:59:48.000 --> 00:59:51.000 talk to you about the healthy community living program 00:59:51.000 --> 00:59:54.000 . I think it's a wonderful resource for centers 00:59:54.000 --> 00:59:58.000 for independent living. And I'm happy to get into the nuts and 00:59:58.000 --> 01:00:01.000 bolts with you any time. Send me an e-mail 01:00:01.000 --> 01:00:04.000 . Or we can 01:00:04.000 --> 01:00:07.000 chat at the vendor table. Join me for a 01:00:07.000 --> 01:00:10.000 presentation on Friday where we will talk more about 01:00:10.000 --> 01:00:13.000 using this on Zoom. Thank you so much for being 01:00:13.000 --> 01:00:21.000 here. Have a wonderful day.
