On my council 00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:18.000 we have a very small council. We have 9 00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:21.000 councilmembers when we are full. So 00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:25.000 we have our unique opportunities 00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:28.000 and barriers with that. It is always -- we 00:28:28.000 --> 00:28:31.000 just kind of in the last 1 1/2 or so, 00:28:31.000 --> 00:28:34.000 almost had 100% change over in council 00:28:34.000 --> 00:28:37.000 and make up. 00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:40.000 That provides the opportunity as we learn and grow 00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:44.000 to really educate folks around 00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:47.000 IL. Bringing in our sent 00:28:47.000 --> 00:28:51.000 centers voice through our 00:28:51.000 --> 00:28:55.000 directors and staff to talk about 00:28:55.000 --> 00:28:58.000 specifically around center services. 00:28:58.000 --> 00:29:01.000 Not everybody has the same information 00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:04.000 or at the same knowledge base 00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:07.000 . So we've really taken that opportunity to do some 00:29:07.000 --> 00:29:10.000 training. And information and he's special 00:29:10.000 --> 00:29:16.000 especially we will touch on later, around 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:19.000 exitibility and rice 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:22.000 race that conversation is 00:29:22.000 --> 00:29:25.000 front and center and begin those con 00:29:25.000 --> 00:29:28.000 conversations internally with the 00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:31.000 council and wanting to elevate that continue 00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:34.000 to elevate that conversation and exterior 00:29:34.000 --> 00:29:37.000 externally with the partners we are developing those 00:29:37.000 --> 00:29:40.000 relationships with. And what is the 00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:06.000 responsibilities that we have. For me, 00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:09.000 our basic responsibility is to insure 00:30:09.000 --> 00:30:12.000 people with disabilities have opportunities 00:30:12.000 --> 00:30:16.000 to advance independently. As possible. 00:30:16.000 --> 00:30:19.000 We are to 00:30:19.000 --> 00:30:22.000 identify various barriers for the 00:30:22.000 --> 00:30:25.000 structural and tonal societal barrier 00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:28.000 barriers and address those. And 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:32.000 for us, I feel sometimes 00:30:32.000 --> 00:30:35.000 we may have gotten comfortable and 00:30:35.000 --> 00:30:38.000 we're not necessarily 00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:42.000 adjusting or trying to move forward or 00:30:42.000 --> 00:30:45.000 progress. In what advocacy 00:30:45.000 --> 00:30:48.000 looks like. In the climate 00:30:48.000 --> 00:30:51.000 in which we live now, things are change 00:30:51.000 --> 00:30:55.000 changing rapidly. And are we 00:30:55.000 --> 00:30:58.000 preparing ourselves to make the adjustments? 00:30:58.000 --> 00:31:01.000 ? Have we made the adjustments? I saw that 00:31:01.000 --> 00:31:04.000 that there was a question in the chat. I hope 00:31:04.000 --> 00:31:07.000 we will be able to address that later 00:31:07.000 --> 00:31:11.000 . Knowing when and when not to push 00:31:42.000 --> 00:31:45.000 . When and not to speak or have 00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:48.000 having things said or knowing 00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:51.000 who to go to. When you talk 00:31:51.000 --> 00:31:54.000 talk about external leader 00:31:54.000 --> 00:31:59.000 leadership. And I think, 00:31:59.000 --> 00:32:02.000 I hope I didn't -- something popped up 00:32:02.000 --> 00:32:07.000 on my screen. Okay. 00:32:07.000 --> 00:32:10.000 Where we could possibly have the best impact. 00:32:10.000 --> 00:32:13.000 . We also had major 00:32:20.000 --> 00:32:23.000 changes within our VR system. 00:32:23.000 --> 00:32:26.000 Our entity we equal G 00:32:26.000 --> 00:32:29.000 BRA Georgia vocal 00:32:29.000 --> 00:32:32.000 vocational 00:32:32.000 --> 00:32:36.000 rehab I'llation agency. Over the last 00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:39.000 5 years we had four directors. It is 00:32:39.000 --> 00:32:42.000 It is a constant reeducating 00:32:42.000 --> 00:32:45.000 individuals leadership in regards to 00:32:45.000 --> 00:32:48.000 what SILC and 00:32:48.000 --> 00:32:51.000 CI L do. Unfortunately, 00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:54.000 for us the leadership that came in, they 00:32:54.000 --> 00:32:58.000 they are more money man 00:32:58.000 --> 00:33:01.000 management leadership. And not 00:33:01.000 --> 00:33:04.000 really knowing exactly what it is that is SILC 00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:07.000 and the CI L do and 00:33:07.000 --> 00:33:11.000 how beneficial that could be in helping them 00:33:11.000 --> 00:33:15.000 advocate and make change and 00:33:15.000 --> 00:33:17.000 work with individuals with disabilities. Our partner 00:33:17.000 --> 00:33:21.000 partners that we have other organizations 00:33:21.000 --> 00:33:24.000 , that are zamt 00:33:24.000 --> 00:33:27.000 disability focuses 00:33:27.000 --> 00:33:30.000 are establishing relationships within. 00:33:30.000 --> 00:33:33.000 . We have close relationships with our 00:33:33.000 --> 00:33:36.000 Georgia developmental disability counsel 00:33:36.000 --> 00:33:40.000 council. GDD 00:33:40.000 --> 00:33:43.000 C. Georgia advocacy 00:33:43.000 --> 00:33:46.000 office. We have good relationship with all 00:33:46.000 --> 00:33:49.000 all of our center directors. 00:33:49.000 --> 00:33:52.000 So all of these external partnership 00:33:52.000 --> 00:33:55.000 partnerships and again other things that might be in your 00:33:55.000 --> 00:33:58.000 state. We feel are key. We found that 00:33:58.000 --> 00:34:01.000 it is almost imperative to 00:34:01.000 --> 00:34:05.000 to have these relationships because we want to 00:34:05.000 --> 00:34:07.000 develop small coalitions 00:34:07.000 --> 00:34:11.000 around the state. The SILC is great 00:34:11.000 --> 00:34:14.000 . Georgia has 159 00:34:14.000 --> 00:34:17.000 counties. It could be challenging to be 00:34:17.000 --> 00:34:21.000 able to go into every county 00:34:21.000 --> 00:34:24.000 and meet with some of the organization 00:34:24.000 --> 00:34:27.000 organizations there. But we work 00:34:27.000 --> 00:34:30.000 closely with our centers. Independent he 00:34:30.000 --> 00:34:33.000 Independently 00:34:33.000 --> 00:34:36.000 Independent living they have a connection for the region or 00:34:36.000 --> 00:34:39.000 areas they serve. We could develop co- 00:34:39.000 --> 00:34:42.000 coalitions and everybody is on the same page, 00:34:42.000 --> 00:34:45.000 we found that we are more effective and 00:34:45.000 --> 00:34:48.000 presenting our 00:34:48.000 --> 00:34:51.000 evidence towards advocacy. Internally, we 00:34:51.000 --> 00:34:55.000 we know that is important to make sure that your staff 00:34:55.000 --> 00:34:58.000 is actually on board. 00:34:58.000 --> 00:35:01.000 I'm fortunate 00:35:01.000 --> 00:35:04.000 my council is very 00:35:04.000 --> 00:35:07.000 small. We had people term off. 00:35:07.000 --> 00:35:10.000 We had people who are waiting to search 00:35:10.000 --> 00:35:13.000 serve on our board. But unfor the Nately 00:35:13.000 --> 00:35:16.000 fortunately our golf 00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:20.000 governor had to get to a point our 00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:23.000 people waiting that has been in 00:35:23.000 --> 00:35:26.000 an issue for quite 00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:30.000 quite some time. We had people waiting for over a year. It is 00:35:30.000 --> 00:35:33.000 challenging. We had to go and so we could 00:35:33.000 --> 00:35:36.000 make sure we got our plan in on 00:35:36.000 --> 00:35:39.000 time. Because the governor had to make sure 00:35:39.000 --> 00:35:43.000 that at the time that we had 00:35:43.000 --> 00:35:47.000 a functioning board. 00:35:47.000 --> 00:35:51.000 We're constantly looking for people around our state. 00:35:51.000 --> 00:35:54.000 For a time there, we 00:35:54.000 --> 00:35:57.000 had what was called me 00:35:57.000 --> 00:36:00.000 Metro heavy within the metro 00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:03.000 area Atlanta and we had 00:36:03.000 --> 00:36:06.000 a lot of people wanting to search 00:36:06.000 --> 00:36:09.000 serve we 00:36:09.000 --> 00:36:12.000 want to make sure we have full representation 00:36:12.000 --> 00:36:16.000 of the state. What works for metro area 00:36:16.000 --> 00:36:19.000 , within our state, doesn't work for some other 00:36:19.000 --> 00:36:22.000 rural areas. There is a saying here 00:36:22.000 --> 00:36:25.000 in Georgia there is Atlanta and the 00:36:25.000 --> 00:36:28.000 rest of Georgia. Could you literally drive 00:36:28.000 --> 00:36:31.000 45 minutes and be completely 00:36:31.000 --> 00:36:34.000 completely in a different setting. 00:36:34.000 --> 00:36:37.000 . So absolutely 00:36:37.000 --> 00:36:40.000 essential to have 00:36:40.000 --> 00:36:44.000 full state representation. 00:36:44.000 --> 00:36:47.000 Our coalition building, look 00:36:47.000 --> 00:36:50.000 looking for agencies and entity 00:36:50.000 --> 00:36:53.000 entity that have nothing to do with disability 00:36:53.000 --> 00:36:57.000 disability. We found that is very 00:36:57.000 --> 00:37:00.000 helpful to us as well. We 00:37:00.000 --> 00:37:03.000 look for individuals that may have either direct 00:37:03.000 --> 00:37:06.000 director indirect 00:37:06.000 --> 00:37:09.000 personal relationship with 00:37:09.000 --> 00:37:13.000 disability and how that works 00:37:13.000 --> 00:37:16.000 again. I believe our climate is 00:37:16.000 --> 00:37:19.000 changing we need to look outside of the box and 00:37:19.000 --> 00:37:23.000 a lot of people come in and take up similar thing 00:37:23.000 --> 00:37:25.000 things we are advocate for. That is helpful. 00:37:25.000 --> 00:37:28.000 We know that voting is key. 00:37:28.000 --> 00:37:31.000 It is key because we should be 00:37:31.000 --> 00:37:35.000 able to whether it is red or blue, 00:37:35.000 --> 00:37:38.000 whatever Representative has to offer, 00:37:38.000 --> 00:37:41.000 whether it is red or the R or D is 00:37:41.000 --> 00:37:44.000 in front of that or behind their name, 00:37:44.000 --> 00:37:49.000 we just want to make sure that 00:37:49.000 --> 00:37:52.000 they have a compassion or heart for people 00:37:52.000 --> 00:37:55.000 with disabilities. I tell you, even 00:37:55.000 --> 00:37:58.000 with the red state, I call me 00:37:58.000 --> 00:38:01.000 call myself independent. There are some things I 00:38:01.000 --> 00:38:04.000 I am conservative about. There are some things 00:38:04.000 --> 00:38:07.000 I'm liberal about. But I've had 00:38:07.000 --> 00:38:13.000 more success with some of my 00:38:13.000 --> 00:38:16.000 Republican -- (No audio) 00:38:16.000 --> 00:38:20.000 Democrat 00:38:20.000 --> 00:38:23.000 representatives we know it is key to know the individual you 00:38:23.000 --> 00:38:26.000 you are working with. And they could becomeal 00:38:26.000 --> 00:38:29.000 allies for you. So we believe that these are the 00:38:29.000 --> 00:38:32.000 best ways that we could have true 00:38:32.000 --> 00:38:35.000 and effective partnerships with 00:38:35.000 --> 00:38:38.000 with the best impact. And actually 00:38:38.000 --> 00:38:41.000 , having seats at the table 00:38:41.000 --> 00:38:44.000 . The Georgia 00:38:44.000 --> 00:38:47.000 SILC has been around for almost 30 00:38:47.000 --> 00:38:50.000 30 years. Just under 30 years. 00:38:50.000 --> 00:38:54.000 . And I came into 00:38:54.000 --> 00:38:57.000 the position, it took me 00:38:57.000 --> 00:39:02.000 a while to really rebrand what 00:39:02.000 --> 00:39:05.000 SILC is.
